Zdravo!

Dear Varaderists around Europe and not only I'm a happy owner of a Varadero silver / black model and I have done 25000 kms; the last 7000 kms I face the following problem that nobody so far is able to give me a solution, maybe some or one of you have an idea what that problem might be. Explaning myself, please read the following letter that I'm planning to address to HONDA UK as I hope the solution might come from there: quote The last 27 months I am the owner of a VARADERO model of 2000 (frame number: JH2SD01AXYM100316, engine number: SD01E). Five (5) months ago and last April in particular when the motorbike had 18,000 kms on the odometer, I noticed a ‘’metal’ noise coming from somewhere in the engine and especially from the right side of it, that noise was sound pretty much the same as ‘’knocking/pinging’’; the characteristics of it was that, when the throttle was opened up accelerating the motorcycle the noise was eliminated but when it was hold stable (neutral in the gearbox) at any number of rpm there was a timbre / tune-up, also it was present during low speed (idle speed 1100rpm) . Please note that this noise come up only when the engine reached the normal working temperature not when cold. Since then I have visited some of the official Honda's workshops in Greece but nobody could give me a solution and so I left for my annual vacations to Austria waiting to see how the noise would be developed. Until the time I returned to Greece (30/08/02) the noise did not changed at all and unfortunately, by myself again, I started the efforts in locating where that noise comes from. This time I requested the assistance of a friend of mine who works as a Chief Mechanic Aircraft Engineer at Athens Airport, holder of a degree in mechanics from the National Metsovio Polytechnic University in Greece and two Masters from Aircraft Engineering School at Perth Scotland and USA. The bike was transferred to Athens Airport and to the flight line where the Aircrafts are having their services. With special acoustic/sound and other equipment we discovered and SECURED that this ugly noise comes from the INSIDE of the front cylinder's exhaust pipe line and at the middle of its length between the points 8-9 as you may see in the illustration here attached and NOT from the engine!!!! Of course you can imagine my surprise. Also, for your information, we measured both cylinders compression which found at the manufacturer's standards (174 psi or 12 bar), with an exhaust fumes analyzer we measured the exhaust emission that also found in accordance with the manufacturer's figures which both is witnessing that nothing is wrong with the air/fuel mixture and the engine is in a very good condition. The spark plugs are having an excellent color and the PAIR system works perfectly, and finally the Pulse Ignition Coil also measured and works perfectly. On the 4th of September I contacted the local Honda reps where the Technical Director at the technical dept informed me that ''he cannot accept that the noise is coming from the inside of the exhaust pipeline and the only help his company can provide me is in taking the bike anew to an ‘’official workshop’’ to disassembled the whole engine this time and measure each one part individually to see if there are any excessive tolerances'' subject which considered unacceptable for two reasons a) the bike has only 24,000kms on its odometer and b) we all know the quality of all Honda’s components (i.e. gears, valves) that cannot be damaged so easily and so fast, beside the fact that a gear does a different noise when it is damaged than knocking/pinging. Also, he informed me that he would try to find a used pipeline to supply me, move that is much appreciated, but this attempt so far failed. As I'm quite sure that the bike is in excellent condition, presently with only 24,000 kms on its odometer all of them made on the highway, excellent tuned in accordance with owner's workshop Manual instructions and guidelines, with the only exception of the carburetors pilot screw settings (turns out 3 4/8 in both cylinders instead of the recommended 2 3/8) due to the climate in Greece, I do not know or figure out what else may cause this noise. unquote best regards George
